August 13

August 13, Friday. Most of us believe that Friday the 13th brings bad luck and one must be cautious. In fact, a lot of people avoid doing things on Friday the 13th that they usually do on an ordinary day – some don’t go out too late, some refuse to go to the office on the said day; while others avoid setting special events on Friday the 13th such as weddings, birthday parties and anniversaries. There are even people who have developed a phobia called Friggatriskaidekaphobia, the irrational fear of Friday the 13th.

What’s with Friday the 13th really? Well, it all started in ancient history, which I would not rather tackle – (do your own research, haha). Personally, I don’t believe in the superstition. After all, we should always be careful, not just on Friday the 13th.  I don’t remember any bad luck that happened to me on the said unlucky date throughout the 28 years of my existence. I’ve had my fair share of unlucky days but they didn’t fall on a Friday the 13th.

Just recently (last Tuesday), our oldest and sweetest dog Buchoy died, accidentally. My mom saw her hanged on her chain, barely breathing. The next day, sir Neil’s dog died due to miscarriage. Friday the 13th came too soon for us.

Real or not, we cannot deny the fact that Friday the 13th has an uncanny impact on people all over the world and you must admit that at one point, you have feared the unlucky date. I never considered the date unlucky and will never think of it as such. It falls on a Friday anyway, so we should not fear it and instead, be thankful because it means that another week of hard work is done.

Do you believe that Friday the 13th brings  misfortune? Do you have any bad experience connected to the ‘cursed’ date?
