Friday the 13th
August 13, Friday. Most of us believe that Friday the 13th brings bad luck and one must be cautious. In fact, a lot of people avoid doing things on Friday the 13th that they usually do on an ordinary day – some don’t go out too late, some refuse to go to the office on the said day; while others avoid setting special events on Friday the 13th such as weddings, birthday parties and anniversaries. There are even people who have developed a phobia called Friggatriskaidekaphobia, the irrational fear of Friday the 13th.
What’s with Friday the 13th really? Well, it all started in ancient history, which I would not rather tackle – (do your own research, haha). Personally, I don’t believe in the superstition. After all, we should always be careful, not just on Friday the 13th. I don’t remember any bad luck that happened to me on the said unlucky date throughout the 28 years of my existence. I’ve had my fair share of unlucky days but they didn’t fall on a Friday the 13th.
Just recently (last Tuesday), our oldest and sweetest dog Buchoy died, accidentally. My mom saw her hanged on her chain, barely breathing. The next day, sir Neil’s dog died due to miscarriage. Friday the 13th came too soon for us.
Real or not, we cannot deny the fact that Friday the 13th has an uncanny impact on people all over the world and you must admit that at one point, you have feared the unlucky date. I never considered the date unlucky and will never think of it as such. It falls on a Friday anyway, so we should not fear it and instead, be thankful because it means that another week of hard work is done.
Do you believe that Friday the 13th brings misfortune? Do you have any bad experience connected to the ‘cursed’ date?
I love friday the 13th just like I love halloween. I feel sorry for the dogs tho. My dog batik died last tuesday too.
hmm… not really a fan of Friday the 13th in terms of “badluck”. As far as I can remember, I’ve never had any “badluck” if that day falls on a Friday…
However, I do tend to joke among friends that it’s probably the reason for me to be unusually “insane” or “me kakaibang topak” like I would every full moon. BTW, I love the full moon…I get “moonstruck” always.
PS. I feel for the dog-owners being a dog-lover/breeder and all. I still haven’t decided on getting another dog since my favorite lab died and our Akita went missing last year.
something weird happened last night. i don’t know if it was just me or because it was Friday the 13th. i kept on editing this entry last night but it couldn’t be fixed. seriously.
yesterday was the first day of my 2nd year in EPH so i do not have the right to consider the day unlucky. strange maybe, but not unlucky.
consider it as a fluke of technology Ms. Cee.
Rest in peace Buchoy.
i also don’t believe in superstitions.
and i love fridays, 13th or not.
P.S. sino pala author ng papyrus post ngayon? i wonder.. hmmm..
misslethwaite: si Ms. Cee.
BTW, have you guys ever heard about the superstition on why dogs/family pets suddenly die? They say it is meant to extend/spare their master’s life from danger or death…
My first born was born on a Friday the 13th. My superstition about this day has ended back in high school. However, black cats freak me out when they suddenly jump out and stare at you with their green unblinking eyes.
Just wanna share…
I kinda heard a lot of superstitions from my mom like don’t do any hard work on holy Thursday until black Saturday because the lord is dead. I don’t really believe it at all.
I usually met misfortunes, not too bad actually, but it doesn’t fall on a Friday the 13th, I don’t really consider it as bad luck…things like that happens all the time…whether you are careful or not….
i dont even know something silly hapent to me but i dont want to say it i can only believe it
